After the admission work was finally done, Danish was taken inside for his class. He kept turning back, waving at them with a big smile, clearly excited and a little nervous at the same time.
Lily waved back until he disappeared into the classroom.
When they walked out of the school building, the air between Lily and David felt tight again. Too quiet. Too heavy.
As they stepped down the steps, Lily’s eyes caught a white car parked across the road.
She stopped walking.
“I’m leaving on my own now,” she said, her voice calm but firm. “And you pick Danish up after school. I won’t be able to.”
David immediately turned to her.
“What do you mean you won’t be able to?” he asked, irritation clear in his tone. “Where are you going?”
Lily didn’t even look at him properly.
“I don’t need to tell you everything,” she said flatly. “Bye.”
