Chapter 1469
Eugenie knew then that Jeremiah was scared.
Refusing to take the Lifebond Poison meant he did not truly love her. Perhaps he feared his lies being exposed, or maybe he feared she would harm him.
At that moment, her heart sank to the bottom with disappointment and resentment toward Jeremiah for deceiving her.
"Later on, I was held captive by the Mullers for a while. Jeremiah kept pressing me for the medicinal formula and the methods to refine the poison base. I refused to yield, eventually feeling so desperate that I attempted suicide. The Mullers took me to the hospital, and later, I found an opportunity to escape."
Mable listened to Eugenie's words, her heart pounding.
She thought the relationship between Jeremiah and Eugenie was simply an emotional entanglement, but she never imagined it would involve so much.
Mable grasped Eugenie's hand. "I'm sorry, Eugenie, truly sorry."
Despite her recent return to the Mullers and her decision to sever ties, Connor was still her father and Jeremiah was her brother. They had hurt an innocent like Eugenie, which weighed heavily on Mable.
"It's not your fault. You don't need to apologize."
Eugenie knew about Mable's relationship with the Mullers. She never harbored resentment toward her. Mable had not returned to the Mullers when the incident between Eugenie and Jeremiah occurred.
She knew nothing and was not involved. Eugenie was a straightforward person; she would not implicate others.
"After so many years, I've come to terms with it," Eugenie said, picking up her coffee and taking a sip, gazing out the window. “Everyone has moments of blindness. The future is far ahead, and I don't want to dwell in the past."
Mable lightly squeezed Eugenie's hand. "The fact that you can think like this shows you've truly let go."
Eugenie looked at Mable, her face slightly chubby but serious. "If it weren't for unexpectedly running into Jeremiah last time, I would've truly forgotten about him."
Mable smiled, unsure whether to tell her that Jeremiah had been looking for her all these years.
Everyone around him knew Jeremiah had a soft spot for her. Despite numerous pressures from the Mullers to marry, he never compromised.
After hearing Eugenie's story, however, Mable thought maybe Jeremiah's feelings for Eugenie were not as deep as she had thought. His lingering affection over the years might be regret over something he could not have.
He was at fault ultimately, and no one else could be blamed.
Mable looked at Eugenie. "You didn't just come here today to tell me about your past with Jeremiah, did you?"
Eugenie nodded. "No, Mable, I want to ask you for a favor."
"You can count on me for anything I can do," Mable said. Eugenie had helped a lot during Blair's recovery, and coupled with the Mullers' indebtedness to her, Mable felt that if she could help Eugenie in any way, it would ease her conscience.
"A few days ago, I received a call from Mr. Goodman."
Eugenie told Mable about the incident at the airport when she received Kyle's call.
She suspected whether Jeremiah had taken the Lifebond Poison.
It was not a trivial matter, and she needed to find out for sure.
After listening to her, Mable was shocked. She thought momentarily and frowned before saying, "But didn't you just say that Jeremiah threw away that Lifebond Poison in front of you? How could he?"
"Yes, I saw him throw it away with my own eyes. But I'm not sure if he picked it up again in the end. Even if he did pick it up and take it, it wouldn't work if he didn't have feelings for me."
Eugenie fell silent for a few seconds before continuing, "Regardless of whether Jeremiah and Kyle's story is true or false, I want to investigate."
"Are you afraid that, just in case, he does have feelings for you?"
Mable's words were interrupted by Eugenie's immediate response. "No, I'm afraid that, just in case, he did take the Lifebond Poison. If our lives are connected, it's too dangerous for me. I don't want that!"
She had been too angry then, eager to make him prove his love for her, which led her to take out the Lifebond Poison. Now, Eugenie did not want to tie her life to his.
Mable asked, "What do you want me to do to help you?"
"Help me draw a few milliliters of Jeremiah's blood."
