Chapter 57 Another Whitehead Trap
After she left, Bernard Jacobson finally asked Madam Jacobson, "Why allow her to come along?"
Madam Jacobson sighed with solemn regret. "You're no spring chicken, Bernard. How can you manage without a woman to care for you? She is your fiancée, after all—this will help you adjust to married life a little early."
As she spoke, Madam Jacobson cast a sidelong glance at Bernard. "Remember, you were the one who insisted on this engagement. Now, are you having second thoughts?"
Her voice carried a teasing lilt.
At first, Madam Jacobson had gone to great lengths to arrange the engagement between Bernard and Vivian Donovan—only to be met with his stubborn refusal.
Now, witnessing Bernard's ambiguous stance toward Lilith, she found herself utterly bewildered.
"No."
Bernard's expression remained impassive, his flawlessly handsome face devoid of emotion.
"Good," Madam Jacobson said, waving her hand dismissively. "The matter in Cyron is of utmost importance. Prepare yourself and leave at once."
