"How can you still say you don't hate me?"
Bernard Jacobson felt a deep, indescribable emotion tighten his throat as Vivian Donovan's words tore at something long buried in his heart.
Vivian leaned against the headboard, her face pale and her body weak. She turned to him, her heart calm. "You're the wealthiest man in Westmoor, living in luxury. I struggle just to survive. We were never meant to meet—two parallel lines that should never cross."
She lowered her gaze, her fingers fidgeting with the bedsheets. "Once I'm well, I'll go to Serene Medical to discharge my parents."
Bernard's brows twitched slightly, but he remained silent.
She continued, "I'm just an ant, a speck in a sea of people. I beg you, Mr. Jacobson—leave me a way to live. I'm not just responsible for myself. I have my parents to care for."
"Is that all? Or have you been scheming all along to make me step aside for Curtis Huxley?"
For the first time since knowing her, Vivian spoke to him with such gravity.
