Her laughter echoed in the sunroom, I stared at her, the smile fading from my lips. "Why are you laughing?"
Renata wiped a tear from the corner of her eye, shaking her head as she set her teacup down on the saucer, "I'm sorry," she gasped, trying to compose herself. "It's just... You're saying you want out."
"I do want out," I insisted, my voice tight. "I never asked for this, Renata. I was kidnapped. I was forced to marry a man who solves his problems with bullets. I want my job. I want my boring, safe life back."
Renata looked at me, her expression sobering. She tilted her head, studying me with a strange mix of pity and admiration. "Nora," she said softly. "Look at you."
