Chapter 66 Grandpa’s Awake

"Don't get too smug. Your day of reckoning is coming! Don't think the support of the big boss will protect you forever. When he goes back to the headquarters, who will watch your back?" the coworker said. Feeling cornered, the coworker unloaded on Sabrina, who found the whole ordeal increasingly amusing. "Do you realize the possibility that you might lose your job before he returns to the headquarters? I'm warning you for the last time. I prefer not to mention my connection with him, but if you keep pestering me, I won't hesitate to use that connection." The room took a moment to reconsider their impressions. Sabrina was no longer seen as an easy mark, her open admission of her relationship with Victor had seen to that. "You're shameless for seducing the boss!" Clearly, those who were uncomfortable would not let Sabrina off the hook. Sabrina was almost amused to laughter by these people. Did they genuinely think she was that easy to bully? "Whether I did it or not, what does it matter to you? One more word, and I'll call him right now!" Sabrina warned. Even though she did not have Victor's number, the mere threat was enough to silence them. After dealing with the troublemaker, no one else dared to challenge Sabrina. She felt relieved and got through her morning's work in no time. * Upstairs in the office, Curtis was engrossed in his work when Marcus sidled up to him. "Hey, I just passed your wife’s office. She’s throwing around Victor’s name to set an example for others. All this talk about Victor this, Victor that. What's the point of you claiming to be an assistant if you can't even help your own wife? Do you feel good about having to rely on Victor's reputation?" Marcus had a talent for irritation, and he honed in on Curtis with precision. As expected, Curtis' expression darkened instantly, his foot lashing out in a sharp kick. "Is stirring trouble your day job now?" The smirk on Marcus's face twisted into a grimace. He mused on the pettiness, pondering if such a snide remark warranted this level of anger. "We've known each other for years and this is how you treat me? I'm disappointed, really disappointed." Curtis gave no reply, leaving Marcus to wonder if he had missed his medication that day. With no comeback from Curtis, Marcus eventually gave up and settled down in front of him. "Listen, I've been investigating the surveillance at your place. Ada definitely has a boyfriend, and he's right here in this office. So your doubts about him not being her boyfriend are misplaced. But I sense some undercurrents between them, possibly some issue with splitting profits or something." Marcus was driven to these conclusions by recent events that seemed to implicate Ada, feeling his suspicions were warranted. Curtis frowned, questioning the solidity of Marcus's theories. "Do you have concrete evidence for this supposed hidden agenda? Claims of profit-splitting need more than just speculations." Marcus thought, 'Evidence isn't so easy to come by! How long do you think I've been onto this? Just unearthing this much is a feat. Does he understand the legwork required to track someone down here? And now he expects tangible evidence? That’s going to take even more time.' Exasperated, Marcus rolled his eyes and sighed, "I’m on it, okay? It’s not a walk in the park to find proof." Curtis was really demanding too much. "Aren’t you concerned for your wife? She's having a tough time at work. If I were you, I'd be fuming." Curtis' grip on his pen tightened at the mention of Sabrina. He recalled how she had analyzed the situation with Barry that morning, maintaining composure and making reasoned decisions despite the stress. He had faith in Sabrina's capabilities. "No way, you're so confident. I thought you guys were just in a marriage of convenience. So, you actually care for her?" Curtis allowed a small smile. "Sabrina is an exceptional woman, and I admire her greatly." Implicitly, his words suggested that even though they are just a contractual couple, Curtis harbored genuine affection for Sabrina. At this, Marcus did not say anything more. He realized the couple had their own dynamic, and he had no place to chime in. Marcus left, and Curtis returned to his work. But as he focused, Sabrina's face kept appearing in his thoughts. It was a strange feeling, something he had never experienced before. Especially now, knowing that Sabrina was a strong individual, her image filled him with a curious sense of warmth. But Curtis did not mind it. He decided not to dwell on it and threw himself back into his work. As the day progressed, both completed their tasks promptly. Sabrina was organizing her belongings when her phone alerted her to a call. It was from the hospital. A wave of dread washed over her. 'Could something have happened to Barry?' she wondered, anxious as she took the call. "Hello, Sabrina. Your grandfather has regained consciousness." Hearing this, Sabrina was overwhelmed with relief. Her eyes welled up instantly. Finally, her grandfather was awake! Eager to see him, she hurriedly finished packing and left the office, calling Curtis as she moved swiftly. Curtis picked up the phone just as he entered the elevator. "Curtis, guess what? Grandpa's awake!"
