Chapter 33 Car Crash

For some time, Felicia had been living in fear of losing her job. She had invested all her energy into securing this role but knew that she tended to take shortcuts at work. Convinced that no one truly enjoyed their job, Felicia seized every opportunity to take it easy, often opting for the least demanding tasks. In an attempt to ease her concerns, Sabrina pointed out that a little laziness did not compare to severe issues like embezzlement. Still, Felicia could not shake the feeling that her laid-back approach might one day cost her. "Hey, sir. The food in our cafeteria is pretty good. It's your first time here, right? How about joining us for lunch?" Felicia extended a warm invitation to Finnick. Originally planning to leave the office, Finnick had second thoughts after bumping into Sabrina in the elevator. Felicia's kind invitation was just the nudge he needed. "Thanks a lot. Once I’m officially hired, it'll be my treat," he said, pleased by the turn of events. "Sounds great." The three of them headed to the cafeteria, where Felicia and Finnick dove into lively conversations on a variety of topics. As Sabrina watched them, it seemed as though they had been friends for years. After lunch, Finnick left and Sabrina and Felicia returned to the office. "Do you like Finnick?" Sabrina found herself asking, her curiosity getting the better of her. Finnick was Sabrina's senior in school and had once been in a serious relationship. Watching Felicia and Finnick hit it off so naturally made her wonder. "Hey, are you kidding me? I noticed Finnick only has eyes for you. I was just getting a read on him, seeing if he's relationship material." Felicia looked confused. Why would Sabrina jump to such a conclusion just because she and Finnick had lively conversations? To Felicia, it was crystal clear that Finnick's gaze toward Sabrina had a tenderness reserved only for someone special. However, Sabrina seemed utterly oblivious to it. "I really don't know what you're getting at. Finnick and I are just old friends, nothing more," Sabrina brushed it off, clearly uncomfortable with the subject. "Alright, forget it then," Felicia decided to drop it and steer the conversation elsewhere. She could tell that such jokes were not suitable for Sabrina. The conversation shifted to a designer handbag Felicia had her eyes on but could not quite muster the courage to purchase. Sabrina could relate, knowing what it was like to want something so much yet hesitate at the last moment. Just as the afternoon's work began, a call from her brother Barry flashed on Sabrina's screen, making her heart plummet. She had a bad feeling. "Sabrina, you need to get to the hospital right away! There's been a car crash!" "Who's been in an accident?" Sabrina's face turned ashen. The idea of a car accident in the short time she had been away was unfathomable. "It's... Grandpa and Ada." Barry's voice trembled, betraying his own pain. In a matter of moments, their grandfather and Ada had been hit by a car. It was almost too much for him to bear. "Which hospital? I'm coming right now." Without hesitation, Barry quickly relayed the location. Looking pale and frazzled, Sabrina asked Felicia to call in sick for her. She grabbed her bag and dashed out, leaving Felicia concerned and hoping for the best. As Sabrina reached the ground floor, Sabrina spotted Finnick still in his car. Finnick stepped out of his car and approached her, his face etched with concern upon seeing how pale she looked. "Is something wrong?" he asked. "Finnick, can you drive me to the hospital? My grandpa's been in a crash," she urged. Without a word, Finnick rushed her into the car and sped off. As they pulled away, another vehicle rolled up to the building. Victor watched from his car, utterly bewildered as they vanished into the distance. 'Was that Sabrina? And did she just jump into a car with a stranger?' he wondered aloud. Curtis, who also witnessed the scene, noted, "Something serious must've happened. It’s still work hours after all." Victor's hand hovered over his phone, contemplating a call, but Curtis intervened. "Don't call her," Curtis said, before exiting the car and heading into the building. Victor was puzzled by Curtis's indifferent attitude toward his wife's circumstances. With some reluctance, he stashed his phone back in his pocket. 'If Curtis isn't bothered, why should I meddle?' he mused, sensing he would be crossing a line. Back in the office, Curtis was lost in thought, his gaze fixed on his silent phone. Victor could feel Curtis wrestling with the idea of calling Sabrina. The tension was palpable. "Look, I know you're only going to be married for a year. But she's your wife, man. You should find out what's going on," Victor urged. Curtis looked up, locking eyes with him. "You may leave now." Feeling dismissed like an irrelevant adviser, Victor left the room. Annoyed, he thought to himself that Curtis would regret this decision someday. Once Victor was gone, Curtis did not dial Sabrina's number. Instead, he reached out to Daniel, who was leisurely taking a stroll downstairs.
