Chapter 30 Grandpa's Concern

Sabrina gave Barry an incredulous look as she voiced her disappointment. How could he have kept such an important secret from her? It not only made her look bad but also left her feeling embarrassed. Barry, equally frustrated, retorted, "Now you know how upset I feel. Don't worry about the gift; you can buy something tomorrow." With those words, they both found a way to move past this without making things more awkward. Sabrina graciously accepted the gift from Ada and decided to reciprocate with something of similar value. "Thank you, Ada," Sabrina said sincerely. Ada maintained her flawless smile and nodded but didn't say anything further. Unnoticed by everyone, Ada's gaze occasionally drifted toward Curtis. Their conversation continued, and the siblings, who hadn't seen each other in nearly a year, had a lot of catching up to do. In contrast, Ada and Curtis quietly observed, not wanting to interrupt their bonding time. After some time, Curtis abruptly stood up to answer a phone call. When he returned, the conversation had naturally concluded. "Do you have something to attend to?" Sabrina knew Curtis had just returned from a business trip, and there might be work matters that needed his attention. She wouldn't mind if he had something important to deal with. However, Curtis went straight to the door and opened it. There stood Daniel. Earlier, when Parker and Barry had arrived, Daniel was still resting in his room, and Sabrina didn't want to disturb him. But once Daniel woke up and found the house empty, he deduced that Sabrina's family must have arrived. He swiftly made his way to Sabrina's house, bearing two exquisite boxes as gifts for Parker and Barry. Parker and Daniel, being of similar age and having experienced a lot in life, quickly connected and chatted. The two older men understood each other quite well, chatting and laughing, while the young adults observed. Curtis just silently observed as Sabrina joined in the conversation. For some reason, he found it entertaining. Ada, on the other hand, didn’t really focus her attention on Barry. Instead, her gaze frequently shifted between Sabrina and Curtis. Women's intuition often allowed them to pick up on subtle nuances. She easily detected the apparent distance between Sabrina and Curtis, leading her to question the true nature of their marital relationship. It seemed that their marriage wasn't as picture-perfect as it seemed. Sabrina's silence about her marriage, especially in the presence of family, raised questions in Ada's mind. She had keenly observed the dynamics during their conversation and deduced that the reason Selena didn't speak to Curtis the entire time was that she was worried the true nature of their relationship might be discovered. However, Selena could never have imagined that during their conversation, Ada had already picked up on the clues. Meanwhile, Parker and Daniel continued chatting happily. "In the past couple of weeks, Sabrina has been diligently preparing for your visit, telling me amusing stories from her childhood. Now that I finally meet you in person, I'm delighted, but at the same time, I feel a bit embarrassed," Daniel brought up the topic of Curtis and Sabrina's marriage. It could be said that Sabrina and Curtis's marriage was largely orchestrated by himself, so he always felt the need to explain it to Parker. Moreover, Daniel didn't believe that Curtis would take the initiative to clarify this matter. As long as Curtis didn't upset people with his words, it was considered giving them face. Parker smiled and responded, "In my younger days, I met many people and traveled to many places, so I can tell at a glance that your grandson is not an ordinary person. Their marriage did come as a surprise to me, but I have high hopes for their future." Daniel felt a sense of relief in his heart. "Sabrina is a wonderful girl, kind-hearted and very caring. When we were neighbors in the past, Sabrina often took care of me. Now that they're married, I feel even more fortunate. We've become a family, and you've taken good care of Sabrina," Daniel turned to praise Curtis at the end. The two elderly gentlemen, sitting together discussing their grandchildren's marriage, exchanged compliments about each other's grandchildren. As their conversation continued, they decided to have a meal together. "Why don't we go to my place? This house doesn't have everything prepared yet, and we're so close, just next door," Daniel suggested. Daniel had already prepared the ingredients for a meal. Parker eagerly agreed, and everyone moved to the adjacent house. It was the first time the two families sat down to eat together, and the atmosphere was incredibly harmonious. Daniel's biggest concern had been whether Curtis would behave respectfully towards their guests, but Curtis surprised him by being exceptionally courteous. After the meal, Parker and Barry returned next door. Sabrina quickly finished tidying up the dining table and joined them. When she arrived, only Parker was sitting on the sofa, with two cups of hot water on the coffee table. Barry and Ada were nowhere to be seen. Parker got straight to the point, "Tell me, Sabrina, how do you truly feel about this marriage? Curtis is an outstanding man, and there are plenty of potential women he could have chosen from as his wife." She knew that she couldn’t avoid the topic of her marriage with Parker. "I remember you mentioned you had a boyfriend before this. Alan, wasn't it? I’m sure it wasn't Curtis," Parker continued. Sabrina had only mentioned about Alan casually to her grandfather in the past. She didn't expect Parker to remember it. Parker had always assumed that Sabrina would marry Alan, so he was surprised to find out that she had married a man she hadn't known for long. "Grandpa, I broke up with Alan. He did some terrible things, so I ended our relationship and married Curtis. While it may have seemed hasty, Curtis is actually a very good person, and I'm very happy and comfortable with him," Sabrina responded, omitting some details. She wasn't sure if what she said would completely ease Parker's concerns, but it was at least a step toward reassuring him. Parker furrowed his brow, suspecting Alan had betrayed her. "A man who misbehaves before marriage is likely to do so afterward. Breaking up with him was the right choice. However, are you truly certain that Curtis is someone you can trust?" Parker asked with genuine concern.
