Chapter 27 Curtis's Transformation
As Sabrina returned home, she found herself in higher spirits. However, an unusual tension hung in the air, casting a serious pall over the atmosphere. Daniel occupied a single-seater couch, his eyes locked in an intense glare at Curtis.
Curtis, still dressed in his morning's home attire, had evidently skipped work for the entire day. Sabrina couldn't help but notice a subtle transformation in Curtis.
In the past, he had seemed devoid of empathy, but now, he appeared to be placing greater importance on family life, shifting his focus away from work. Sabrina wondered if Curtis himself was aware of this change.
She quietly observed the two men locked in a standoff on the couch, her gaze shifting between them.
Clearing her throat, Sabrina addressed Curtis, "How did Grandpa's checkup go today? What did the doctor say about his health?"
"I told you my health is perfectly fine. You guys are making too much fuss!" Daniel grumbled gruffly. His health was actually in good condition. In fact, he had feigned illness, not only to lure Curtis back home but also to push him toward marriage.
Now, in order to prevent exposing himself, only the heavens knew the lengths he had gone to during the hospital visit.
Recalling the events of the day, Curtis found the entire ordeal quite headache-inducing. He hadn't anticipated his grandfather, at his age, acting like a child during the medical examination.
His grandfather's uncooperative behavior had turned the hospital visit into a chaotic ordeal, leaving everyone exasperated. Even though it was their hospital, Curtis couldn't help but feel sorry for his employees who had to handle the turmoil caused by his grandfather's stubbornness.
Sabrina noticed both men wore unhappy expressions, and it was clear that something had gone awry during the medical examination.
"Grandpa's health isn't as great as he claims. The doctor mentioned that we need to take good care of his health this year. Excessive emotional distress, at his age, can have detrimental effects on his brain. Additionally, we need to regulate his diet. The doctor provided a list of suitable foods; I'll share it with you later.
It seemed that Daniel's health was not as robust.
Sabrina nodded in agreement. "Don't worry, I'll look after Grandpa. But, Curtis, as his grandson, you should focus more on family. Spend more time with Grandpa; I believe it would make him very happy."
As Sabrina finished speaking, Daniel let out a cold snort.
"What's amusing is that it's because he keeps parading himself in front of me and doing things to annoy me that my emotions become so agitated. If you genuinely want me to be healthier, you should advise him to stop irritating me!"
"Are you serious? Today, you were the one who caused all the commotion throughout the entire day, and you had everyone going in circles around you."
"What do you mean by 'I caused commotion'? I told you that I'm perfectly healthy and don't need to go to the hospital for a checkup. It's you who insisted on dragging me there!"
Daniel was certainly not going to admit that he had caused all the fuss at the hospital today.
Seeing that these two men were about to start arguing, Sabrina quickly intervened. "Grandpa, Curtis has been changing recently, though you might not have noticed. And Curtis, Grandpa is getting older. What harm is there in letting him have his way? He willingly accompanied you to the hospital this morning. You both made mistakes today, so you should apologize to each other!"
Apologize?
Daniel refused, and Curtis was equally reluctant.
With a disdainful snort, Daniel said, "I don't need an apology from him. You two can discuss it. I'm going to rest."
With that, Daniel stood and retreated to his room.
Curtis massaged his temples, feeling a headache coming on. He then retrieved the doctor's dietary recommendations from his phone and forwarded them to Sabrina.
"The doctor mentioned that Grandpa's condition is much improved compared to before, possibly due to a better emotional state. I appreciate your support during this time."
Curtis had a busy job, and although he had returned early and stayed by Daniel's side, it didn't seem to have a positive impact on Daniel's health.
However, ever since their marriage, Daniel's mood had significantly improved. A better mood often correlated with improved health.
Sabrina had a different perspective, though. "It's because of your efforts. When you focus more on your family, unexpected rewards can follow. In the future, try to spend more time with Grandpa."
Curtis didn't deny this and just nodded. Then he suddenly asked, "What about you?"
"What do you mean?"
"Why don't you make more time to accompany your grandfather?"
This question caught Sabrina off guard. Initially, her plan was to bring her grandfather here after buying the house. Her brother could also come and work here, and they could be a happy family of three.
However, after buying the house, her grandfather's health declined, rendering all her plans useless.
"I will, in time," she replied curtly. After this one-year marriage deal was over, she planned to return to her grandfather's side and spend more time with him.
While Sabrina's words were somewhat veiled, Curtis understood their underlying meaning. It left him feeling uneasy, even though he couldn't pinpoint why.
"It's getting late. You should rest early. I didn't go to the office today, so there's still a lot of work to catch up on."
Sabrina acknowledged his words with a nod. Curtis had indeed spent the entire day accompanying Grandpa at the hospital.
Leaving Curtis to his work, Sabrina returned to their bedroom.
After Sabrina returned to the bedroom, Curtis packed his things and left the house.
It wasn't until the next morning that Sabrina heard Daniel complaining. "Always working, working all day long. And now he's going on a business trip knowing that your Grandpa is coming. It's too much!"
A business trip? Sabrina had no knowledge of Curtis planning to travel for work. Had Daniel not mentioned it, she might never have found out.
"Don't you know about his business trip?"
Seeing Sabrina's bewildered expression, Daniel became even more angry.
Frustrated, Daniel began texting Curtis on his phone, conveying his displeasure.
"Grandpa, don't be angry. The doctor said you shouldn't get too emotional, and as for the business trip, it was probably decided at the last minute yesterday. Curtis probably forgot to inform me."
"Don't make excuses for him anymore. With his excellent memory, how could he possibly forget? He intentionally kept it from you!"
