Chapter 32
Scarlett's POV
Less than an hour later, the chaos outside finally began to fade. The warriors had already returned in triumph. Some of them were laughing and bragging to their fellow and non-fellow warriors about how they had killed—wiped out—the rogues who attacked Nightshade earlier.
The air no longer trembled with snarls and howls. The deep rumble we kept hearing earlier—but chose to ignore while trying to protect the pups in the nursery—became nothing more than distant echoes. Instead, it was replaced by the heavy shuffle of paws on gravel, the creak of the gates opening, and the loud murmurs of returning warriors.
I watched as the families of those returning warriors immediately ran to their mates, their husbands, wives, sons, and daughters—with relief smiling on their faces.
I knew how devastating war could be. It could destroy a family. That's why whenever there was war between packs, the families of those warriors would pay tribute to their moon goddess and ask for protection.
