I clutched at Lucien tighter, dragging him against me while staying vigilant at my surroundings especially since I had just confirmed that there a dozen of enemies coming in our direction. Tears had already blurred my vision, but I refused to let him go.
I had to move. I had to save him.
“Hold one,” I whispered, half to him, and half to myself, even though his breath was faint and his eyes were closed. “Just hold on a little longer.”
Finally, I found a hollow—an alcove of rock hidden by overgrown roots and thick shadows. I lowered him carefully onto the mossy ground, my hands trembling as I tore at my pack.
