Sociologists often examine the behavioral differences between youth and adulthood, frequently concluding that younger individuals tend to exhibit greater bravery. However, I’ve come to realize that what many perceive as youthful courage may simply stem from ignorance, while the supposed timidity of older individuals often reflects the caution born of experience. Fearlessness, when untempered, can lead to recklessness, while excessive caution can paralyze a person with indecision.
This realization dawned on me as I reflected on Rhode. At first, I believed he was running away from his responsibilities. However, I now understand that his hesitation was not cowardice. Instead, it was the careful consideration of someone who has seen the complexities of leadership. His role as Beta had taught him the value of compromise, a skill vital in politics. But compromise, while necessary, can also stifle ambition.
