Chapter 183 There’s Probably No One Like Me
Lindsey only had four months left. She only said this so that Zayn would give up on her. She also wanted to kill her own notions. Four months of living in harmony would be their final gift to each other.
In the future, Zayn would probably not meet another woman like Lindsey, but he might meet another girl that was more suitable for him.
Even after comforting herself so many times, Lindsey still felt suffocated when she thought of this outcome.
"What if I don't agree?" Behind her, Zayn finally responded.
Lindsey's ears were buzzing and she could not hear his tone, but Zayn's uncooperative behavior made her upset.
The man behind her was relentless and hugged her tightly from behind. "Why four months? What will happen in four months? Lindsey, what are you hiding from me?"
Lindsey did not expect him to be so perceptive, so she brought out what she had thought of long ago. "You probably don't remember that it’s our fourth anniversary in four months, so isn't it perfect to end our relationship then? Let's not waste each other's time anymore."
After saying this to Zayn, she only felt anguished.
Since the cruise incident, Zayn actually wanted to stay away from Lindsey. That was because he could not calm down as soon as he thought of Lindsey's question, "Why didn't you come earlier?" It was as if someone had stabbed him in the heart and twisted the knife constantly. However, he did not even have the right to cry out in pain.
That night at the hospital was both torture and hope for him.
When Lindsey gently hugged him, he clearly felt her feelings for him.
Sometimes, it was this undeclared emotion that was exactly what love was.
Zayn had built numerous walls around his heart to guard his feelings, but a single hug from her was all it took for the walls to collapse.
He thought there was a sliver of hope, but once he turned around, she pushed him into an even colder place.
That was why during this period, Zayn was trying to match Lindsey’s behavior. If she did not care about him, he would not care about her either, but he finally could not bear it any longer.
Zayn suddenly spoke, “I remember. It was very cold that day and you were wearing a dress as you waited for me outside. I never showed up and asked my assistant to give you a copy of my photo to get the marriage license from the City Hall.”
He stood behind Lindsey. After he said this, the person in front of him laughed mockingly and slowly said, "So you still remember? I thought I was the only one who remembered this. I've only been married once in my life. I don't know what other people's wedding photos are like, but there’s probably no one like me who took their wedding photos alone and even got their marriage license by themselves."
Nonetheless, back then, she was still holding on to the idea of a lifetime and gladly went to the appointment.
She was humiliated on the day of their wedding and after that long period of rejection, she did not feel the slightest sense of happiness in her marriage.
However, all of this was already in the past. Lindsey felt that it was so absurd. She did not blame Zayn, but she felt sorry for the girl who stood waiting in the cold for a full day back then.
Zayn misunderstood her. His voice became a little hoarse as if he was in great sorrow, but his words were still calm and unhurried as usual.
"Actually, I was watching you the entire time and even followed you to the City Hall. I don't know why I did that. I hated you so much, but when I saw you stubbornly forcing out a smile as you looked at Quentin even though you were clearly close to tears, there was an indescribable feeling in my heart."
Lindsey used to be able to hold back her tears because she knew better than others that crying was useless. However, after coming back, she repeatedly lost her voice and cried because of Zayn. Even now, her tears were uncontrollable.
"Zayn, what's the point of you saying this now?" Lindsey sternly said. However, she choked at the end, so the faked anger she was trying to convey became a little less convincing. She even sounded a little aggrieved.
“Zayn Guggenheim! I don’t think you understand that you can't turn back time! It’s impossible to go back to the time when we were in the orphanage or to the time when I loved you wholeheartedly!” Lindsey shouted despite the tears flowing from her eyes.
She ignored the pain that spread from her chest to her fingertips, then turned around to look at the man in front of her.
Zayn did not look much better than her.
"Lindsey, we can go back. I’ll try my best to compensate you." His hoarse voice made a plea.
Lindsey wiped away the tears from her face and opened her still teary eyes wide as she said, "Even if we did this all over again, we would still end up like this. Zayn, you’ll find the one who really suits you, and so will I."
She finally calmed down by the end of her sentence.
The man opposite was far less calm than she was. When Zayn heard these words, his knuckles cracked from clenching his fists too hard. His eyes were also bloodshot. Lindsey even thought that Zayn was going to hit her.
However, the enraged man finally just gave her a deep look and spat out three words, "As you wish." He then disappeared from the room.
After this emotional contest between them, Lindsey collapsed on the ground.
She felt so empty that she forgot to cry. She only kept emphasizing in her mind that this was all for the best.
Lindsey got up and washed up mechanically, then laid down on the bed.
She had not slept in this bed for almost a year, so she could not help but study it. Mrs. Wendy had already changed out the bedsheets, so it smelled fresh, but perhaps because this bed contained too many memories of Zayn, Lindsey could not fall asleep after a long time.
Their argument was blocked by the door, so no one knew about it.
In the days that followed, Lindsey only saw Zayn at night. Zayn really did as she wished. In front of the old man, he would be gentle to Lindsey, but they would become strangers as soon as the old man left.
The two of them kept up a good act and the old man was happy to see such a picture.
However, after the old man slept, Zayn would leave the mansion.
Lindsey saw him on multiple occasions and almost could not help but call out to him, but she forced herself to suppress this urge.
Two days later in the evening, Lindsey’s seemingly peaceful life was disrupted by a phone call from Allie Wilford.
