Over the next few days, Keegan stopped coming home at night. He took over Anna's divorce case and ran himself ragged for her. When Anna's emotions went off the rails, he sped across multiple state lines overnight and brought her best friend back to stay with her. To make her happy, he ran red lights just to buy pastries from her favorite bakery. He said it was a favor he owed Anna. But on the day she came back, he got drunk and shouted her name all night long. Men were like that. They said one thing and meant another. On the day Anna's divorce was finalized, Keegan drank all night. When I got home, he was slumped on the couch, holding a doll so worn that it was nearly falling apart, smiling at it in a daze.
