Beckett's place.
Madeleine was curled up under the covers, her heart racing like crazy.
She could literally hear it pounding in her ears.
The closer Beckett got, the more flustered she felt.
The room dimmed as the light from under the blanket disappeared—Madeleine knew he'd turned the light off.
The bedside lamp slowly faded to black, and she felt like her heart was stuck in her throat.
"You always sleep like this, hiding under the covers?" Beckett's voice came through the darkness, smooth and oddly comforting, making her heart beat even faster.
Finally mustering the nerve, she peeked her head out from under the blanket, wrapping it tightly around herself and glancing at Beckett, eyes full of caution.
He was lying right beside her, his tone low and calm. "Go to sleep."
Maybe it was because the bed was so huge, the space between them felt miles wide. Neither of them said anything else. Just quiet.
He really didn't touch her. And somehow, that let her fall asleep peacefully.
