"I'm just smarter," Felix replied smugly.
I raised an eyebrow. "So you're calling me dumb?"
His smug expression vanished instantly. "No way. You're the smartest woman I know."
Satisfied, I gave a small nod and returned to working on my clay. Once the cup was in the kiln, I suddenly said, "I don't care. I want the one you made."
He reached over and patted my head, indulging me. "Okay."

While we waited for the pieces to fire up, the shop owner invited us up to the rooftop garden. She brought us cake and coffee that she had made herself.
I always had a thing for sweets—partly because I tend to suffer from low blood sugar, but mostly because sweets were the one thing that genuinely made me happy.
I remembered the one decent thing Felix ever did back in high school. The school didn't allow snacks, and I was always getting in trouble for having candy and chocolate in my backpack.
