Chapter 672

Wendy felt sorry for Kingston, thinking he just didn't have any luck with the ladies. As she spoke, she opened her bag and slid the plastic-wrapped Plague Compendium inside. After zipping her bag up, she spun on her heels to leave. She had just reached the doorway when a man suddenly yelled from behind. "Stop right here!" Wendy was startled. Had she been caught? Kingston was totally wasted. How could he be awake? Wendy slowly turned around and saw Matthew sitting on the couch, watching her. She secretly sighed with relief. It looked like Matthew was up. She was just glad that it wasn't Kingston. Wendy smiled and explained, "Kingston is drunk, so he just needs some rest. I'm heading home now, and I'll swing by tomorrow." Leaving? She actually thought she could just walk away? Matthew got up and coldly warned, "After taking Plague Compendium, do you honestly think you can just walk out?" He totally didn't see this coming. After all, Kingston was so secretive about Plague Compendium. Matthew had helped Kingston a few times, but he still wouldn't spill a word about it. On top of that, he even bragged about being ungrateful. Who would've thought Kingston would just hand Plague Compendium to a woman like that? He must have been pretty desperate. Just a little sweet talk from a woman, and he fell for it. Wendy tried to keep it together and replied with a grin, "Kingston gave me this book as a token of our love. So, our wedding plans are set in stone starting today. As the owner of the book, why can't I leave with it?" Matthew shook his head. Even at this point, Wendy was still making up stories. He sternly stated, "The book stays here!" Wendy was a little flustered. "Why can't I just take it with me?" Matthew walked over to Wendy. "You already know the answer. Just tell me. Who are you working for?" Wendy realized something was off and slowly backed away. "What are you up to? I'm a woman. Are you seriously going to lay your hand on a woman?" Matthew raised his hand and slapped Wendy across the face. The sound of the smack echoed loudly upon impact. This bastard! Wendy covered her face in shock, and then she screamed angrily, "Are you out of your mind? How could you hit a woman? You call yourself a man?" Was he not a man now? How did she have the nerve to act all high and mighty after being caught stealing? Did she honestly think being a woman gave her a pass? A cold gleam flickered in Matthew's eyes. He raised his hand and slapped Wendy's cheek hard, knocking her to the floor. He snapped, "Do you feel that now? Is this strong enough? Am I not a man?" After getting hit, Wendy was seeing stars with her head buzzing. It took a long time to recover. She hadn't witnessed a man hitting a woman in forever, except for the occasional news report. It was almost unheard of in daily life. Matthew must have lost it. Furious, she started yelling, "Y-you are a monster. How could you hit a woman? I-I'll make you pay for this." Did she seriously mean it? Matthew picked up a nearby stool. "One of my friends has a valuable medical book called Medieval Medicine. Some people came after it, and I took them all out. You have tough luck running into me." With that, he casually raised the stool, ready to smash it down. Did he kill them all? Frightened, Wendy's face went pale. She panicked the moment she realized Matthew was really going to strike, scrambling away as she shouted, "I'm just a woman! I don't know anything. You can't kill me!" Did she just play the gender card again? Did she see this as some kind of love story? That logic made zero sense.
