"Love your daughters equally?" Cressida suddenly laughed.
"That's a new one. I've never heard that throwing your daughter's things out of her room and banning her from the house counts as love."
She raised her head, looking directly at Helena's instantly frozen face, and continued, "I never realized before that this is how the Ashworth family raises their children. No wonder I've never been close to you."
"You…" Gideon's face flushed with humiliation. He slammed his cutlery down on the table, anger flaring as he instinctively raised his hand.
Cressida didn't flinch. She met his glare calmly and said in an unhurried tone, "Mr. Ashworth, you might want to think twice before you hit me. After that slap, who do you think you'll offend? Me, or Mr. Leigh sitting right here?"
Gideon's raised hand froze in mid-air.
Only then did he realize the real focus of the evening wasn’t him, nor the defiant daughter who dared to challenge him in public. It was Tristan.
