Angela lowered her head, her cheeks flushing, and muttered softly, “If I hadn’t run, I’d just be waiting for you to scold me, wouldn’t I?”
Richard shone his flashlight to check her foot. Fortunately, her sturdy sneakers had protected her, and there was no injury.
When he remained silent and unresponsive, Angela felt even more self-conscious, thinking she might have overstepped again. She turned her face away awkwardly. “Your foot’s fine. Can you walk?” Richard asked in his deep voice. Then, noticing her shoelace was untied, he set the flashlight aside and bent down to tie it.
