Chapter 134
Celeste didn't touch a single bite from the table. After sitting around the room for quite a while, she typed out a message to Ethan, listing all the things that felt off.
She wasn't trying to be paranoid, but hey-better safe than sorry, right? The elderly couple seemed harmless enough, just super guarded around outsiders. The real red flags? That locked-up west room and the daughter-in-law who could sing English tunes like a pro.
The signal in the mountains was terrible. It was a long time before Ethan finally replied. His response was painfully brief: "Don't overthink it. Mr. Foster's nearly off the highway."
Reading that, Celeste felt like she'd swallowed a mouthful of cold wind.
She just couldn't figure Ethan out. If he didn't care, why had he treated her decently ever since she moved into the Shaw family? But then again, if he did care, how could he leave her stranded in a run-down mountain house all alone-just because he didn't want people finding out his legs had long recovered?
