On the Road
The robot was driving, while Jane and Lucas sat together in the backseat.
Not long after they set off, Jane turned her head. Her big, dark eyes—shiny like black grapes—fixed intently on Lucas. At first, he didn’t think much of it, but as the silence stretched and her stare persisted, a prickle of unease crept in.
Reaching out, he gently ruffled her hair. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Brother Lucas,” she said, dead serious, “tell me the truth—how long were you eavesdropping outside Sister Emma’s room?”
Lucas, who should’ve been the one feeling wronged, suddenly felt a strange flicker of guilt. Still, he quickly composed himself and replied coolly, “Long enough to hear everything—what I should’ve and what I shouldn’t have.”
Jane wasn’t even surprised.
“So,” she pressed, “what do you think about all this?”
Lucas hadn’t expected her to ask so boldly. Plotting behind his back and then asking for his opinion? He was torn between amusement and exasperation.
