Chapter 710
As soon as the car pulled up at the Brown residence, Mina leaped out and dashed inside, dragging Jane along with her.
*Slap!*
The sharp sound of a hand striking flesh echoed through the grand foyer just as Mina and Jane reached the entrance of the Brown family villa.
*Slap! Slap! Slap!*
Several more crisp blows followed in quick succession.
Mina’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she turned to Jane. "Hurry up, hurry up! They’re fighting!"
Jane stumbled along, her short legs struggling to keep up as her sister yanked her forward.
"Where did this shameless old hag come from? How dare you barge into my home and lay hands on my son! Where are the guards? What are those useless fools even doing?" The furious voice of Camillie boomed from inside.
By now, the Brown family’s security had already been subdued by John’s bodyguards.
But hearing Camillie’s outburst, Jane planted her feet firmly on the ground and tugged back on her sister’s arm with both hands. "Wait, sis! Big Brother didn’t go in with the Headmistress. Maybe we shouldn’t rush in yet."
Mina skidded to a halt and turned to give her a puzzled look.
Harold chimed in, "Let’s hide and watch first."
Having visited the Brown estate multiple times, the kids were intimately familiar with its layout. Slipping into hiding was second nature to them.
The four little rascals quickly concealed themselves in the courtyard just outside the main hall. Jane released her tiny robotic ant, then swiftly reassembled her brick-sized device to sync with the ant’s camera feed.
Within moments, the scene inside the Brown family’s grand hall flickered to life on the small notebook screen.
John was indeed absent, leaving only the orphanage director, Katalina, alone with the Brown family in the hall.
The scene unfolding was one where Katalina had just delivered another sharp slap across Cayden’s face, her expression dark as she demanded, "Are you signing this agreement or not?"
Though Cayden was a grown man, he stood no chance against Katalina’s strength.
Before he could respond, Camillie, leaning heavily on her dragon-headed cane, erupted in fury. Having earlier called for security to no avail, she now flung her cane aside and lunged at Katalina. "You little harlot, raised by a whore! You seduced my son, and now you dare cause trouble in my home? I’ll tear you apart today!"
Katalina effortlessly twisted the old woman’s arm behind her back, pinning her with a piercing glare. "You raised a scoundrel who ruined my daughter. Keep spewing filth, and I’ll sew your mouth shut myself!"
Camillie jutted her chin defiantly. "Your daughter was the shameless one—"
*Slap!*
Katalina cut her off with another stinging blow. "Ask your precious son if he ever told my daughter the truth! Did he mention he was already married? Did he admit he’s over a decade older than her? Or that he forged documents to marry her?"
She flung a stack of papers onto the floor. "With this evidence alone, I could have your son locked up for years!"
Watching the scene through Jane’s notebook, Mina was electrified, her blood boiling with excitement. She couldn’t help mimicking the motions, itching to charge in and join Katalina in delivering justice.
After all, the Brown family was nothing but a den of snakes every last one of them rotten to the core.
Mina nudged Jane’s elbow. "Hey, did Katalina train in martial arts or something? She’s incredible!"
"Probably!" Jane replied, though she wasn’t entirely sure. In her eyes, Katalina had always seemed capable of anything.
Back at the orphanage, Katalina had taught them to read, play the piano and the moon guitar, and instilled in them the principles of being decent people. Whenever the orphans faced taunts or bullying from neighborhood brats, she’d shield them like a mother hen protecting her chicks.
During her time at the orphanage, she had known that the director whom the children affectionately called "Mama" had a daughter. She remembered that the daughter had just been admitted to university back then a quiet, gentle older sister.
She rarely spoke, but she was kind-hearted and treated the orphans well.
However, her relationship with Katalina seemed strained. Once, she had overheard them arguing.
The sister had accused Katalina of caring only about her work and the orphans, never about their family—never about her. That was why their father had left!
Katalina had responded firmly, saying the orphanage was her home, that her daughter was her child, and so were all the orphans.
Before her time-travel, she had been so consumed by her research on the time machine that she hadn’t kept up with Katalina’s life after leaving the orphanage. She had no idea how things had turned out between Katalina and her daughter.
Later, after Katalina’s death, she had sought out the daughter before her time-travel, hoping to make amends for what she owed Katalina. But the sister had coldly refused.
With icy detachment, the sister had said that Katalina had devoted her entire life to the orphanage, and dying for it was a fitting end. She didn’t need money, nor did she want any.
Jane remembered the sister’s words clearly, but when she tried to recall what the daughter actually looked like, her memory failed her.
Lately, she had noticed that her pre-time-travel memories were growing hazier. It took tremendous effort just to recall a single event.
What had once been vivid recollections now felt shrouded in thick fog, barely discernible.
Meanwhile, in the Brown family’s living room, Camillie paled at Cayden’s words, staring at him in disbelief. Her son had always been cautious, meticulous about protecting his reputation. Even his affairs outside were handled discreetly how could he have left such a glaring weakness for others to exploit?
Convinced this was impossible, Camillie clenched her teeth and declared with confidence, "You think you can fool me with some forged documents? I’m calling the police right now! Dare to cause trouble in the Brown family, and I’ll show you what the law really means!"
Frantic, she scrambled to grab the telephone.
Katalina didn't stop him.
But Cayden suddenly dropped to his knees. "Mom, don't go! These documents are real..."
His words struck Granny Li like a bolt of lightning, freezing her in place. "Cayden, what did you say?"
"I said these documents are real!"
With his head bowed, Cayden remained kneeling before Katalina. "Auntie, Leila and I truly love each other. I swear I'll marry her. Once Aaliyah gives birth, I'll divorce her and bring Leila into our family!"
