When Frederick returned to the courtyard he shared with Hazel, he found her crouched beside a flourishing epiphyllum plant, eyes locked on its tightly closed buds with an almost reverent intensity.
At the gate, Fisher stood at attention, greeting Frederick with a respectful nod the moment he stepped into view.
Hearing voices behind her, Hazel turned. Her face lit up with delight as she sprang to her feet and ran over, gripping Frederick’s hand.
"Frederick, come look!" she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling. "The epiphyllum’s buds have gotten so big—they’re going to bloom in the next night or two, I’m sure of it! Let’s stay a little longer, okay? We have to see them blossom before we leave."
Frederick’s expression softened. Gently, he reached out to ruffle her hair.
"Of course," he replied with quiet affection.
Fisher, standing nearby, shot Frederick a brief, troubled glance.
