In the dead of night, the three generations of the Taylor family finally returned home. The living room was brightly lit. Since Lillian was pregnant, she had already gone upstairs to rest. Alexander and Richard were sitting on the couch waiting when they saw Evelyn, Cassandra, and Vera walk in. The first thing Richard noticed was Vera’s swollen cheek. He immediately stood up and hurried over, his voice tense. “Mom, what happened to Vera’s face?” “Hmph! Ask her yourself,” Evelyn snapped, clearly exhausted and annoyed. She didn’t bother looking back before heading straight upstairs. She had thought bringing Vera to her old friend’s birthday banquet would be a good move, maybe help her save some face.
