OLIVIA’S POV
The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and faint pine. A reminder that even among healers and supernatural strength, pain still lingered—physical and emotional.
Derek sat at the edge of the bed, tying the laces of his boots, already back in form. His stitches were mostly healed, the swelling had gone down, and the bruises—well, they’d be gone in another day or two.
Being an Alpha had its perks.
He caught me staring, and offered a small smile. “I’m not made of glass, Olivia.”
I flinched, guilt tightening around my throat. “No. But you got hurt because of me.”
He stood, stepping closer, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear with frustrating gentleness. “I got hurt because Dominic let his pride get the better of him. That’s not on you.”
But I couldn’t let it go that easily.
“I shouldn’t have brought you into this. I knew what he’s capable of when jealous, and I still stood between you both like a fool.” My voice was low, regretful.
