Chapter 146
Logan's POV:
The hospital room was quiet except for the slow, steady beep of the monitor. My mother’s hand felt frail in mine, her skin cool but warm enough to remind me she was alive. Alive. After so many nights when I thought I had lost her forever, she was finally breathing in front of me again.
Her eyelids fluttered, and I leaned in quickly.
“Mother?” I whispered.
Her lips trembled. No sound at first. Then, faint and broken, I caught words.
“…the… car…” Her breath rattled. “…the… brakes…”
My heart stopped.
I squeezed her hand. “What do you mean? What about the brakes?”
But her eyes slid closed again. She had drifted back into sleep.
“Logan,” Peter said quietly from the other side of the bed. “Don’t force her. Her mind and body are fragile. Let her recover.”
I nodded, though my jaw clenched hard. The brakes. That word echoed in my mind like thunder.
