Chapter 1468
Eugenie's face lit up with a faint smile, though it did not quite reach her eyes, giving off a sense of melancholy.
After a moment of silence, Eugenie continued, "During our time together, we had a lovely period, like any ordinary couple, going on dates and traveling. It was truly the happiest time of my life until my senior year."
Eugenie's tone grew somber. "By then, we had been together for two years. I thought we had more time ahead, that we would continue to be happy, that we had chosen each other as life partners."
"He betrayed you?" Mable asked.
Eugenie shook her head. "No, he proposed to me."
Mable raised an eyebrow. That did not sound like bad news.
Jeremiah proposing to her was a good thing if they were so in love.
Eugenie kept a faint smile, but her voice sounded dry. "He proposed to me, and I said yes. But the next day, his father found out and said my background wasn't suitable for the young mistress of the Mullers, not a suit as his daughter-in-law."
Mable furrowed her brow but remained silent.
"For the two years that Jeremiah and I were together, I always thought he was from an ordinary family. He never told me about his family's background, and I was angry when I found out. I went to confront him, but he suddenly seemed like a different person, cold toward me.
"We didn't talk for a while, then he apologized, and we made up. But not long after, I found out he was meeting potential partners behind my back. Then, I overheard a conversation between him and his father."
Mable's frown deepened. "What did they say?"
Eugenie looked up at Mable, tears glistening in her clear eyes. "He said he didn't love me at all, that being with me was purposeful. Jeremiah knew early on that I was an heir of Southern Jumonte Medical Clan. And being with me was to obtain nearly lost medicinal formulas and poison base from me. The Mullers had invested in a biopharmaceutical company and needed the medicinal formulas from me and my methods of refining poison base."
Eugenie's face bore a self-deprecating smile. "That was their motive. For this, the young master of the Mullers, Jeremiah, didn't hesitate to deceive me and pretend to be in love."
She thought it was really tough on him to play pretend.
Mable looked at Eugenie with sympathy and compassion.
She must have truly loved Jeremiah before. The pure love during college, two years of pursuit, two years of being together.
All those years, only to end up with deception.
If Eugenie was not lying, then Jeremiah was genuinely despicable!
Mable handed Eugenie a tissue.
Eugenie took it, holding back her tears as she smiled. "I won't cry. There's nothing to cry about. Over these years, I've already let go."
Mable did not say anything but could not reasonably determine whether Eugenie's statement of "letting go" was genuine.
"What happened next?" Mable asked.
Eugenie continued, "I was heartbroken at the time. Of course, I immediately went to confront him, still hoping that there might be a misunderstanding and wanting to hear his explanation. Looking back now, I was too naive."
Mable raised an eyebrow. "He admitted it?"
"Yeah, he did. But he had the nerve to say his feelings for me were genuine. At that moment, I was too angry to believe him. I was furious, so I forced him to take a poison called Lifebond Poison. He said he loved me, so I let him prove it. As long as we both took this poison, if we truly loved each other, our lives would be linked, and we would live and die together."
Mable was surprised. "There's a poison like that?"
Eugenie nodded, bitterly smiling. "Of course, he didn't dare to take it in the end. He threw it away in front of me."
