Chapter 3781

From then on, Mr. Longbottom no longer had to worry that his current efforts and sacrifices were all for someone else’s benefit. He could legitimately become the true head, gaining absolute authority in the Longbottom family and Longbottom Corporation, without being held back by others. “I wasn’t telling you to complete the task before Christmas. I was reminding you to step up your efforts and work harder. Stop constantly stirring up trouble for your sister,” Mr. Longbottom criticized. “Your current targets are Serenity Hunt and Sonny Brown, not Camryn Newman.” He added mercilessly, “No matter how you act out, you can’t compete with her. That’s a fact. Apart from being a few years younger than her, you really don’t have anything to compare. You can’t measure up to your younger brother, let alone your sister.” Among the three children of the Newman family, the most useless was Carrie. Of course, her being the most useless was exactly why he could use him. Camryn and Trenton were not so easily manipulated. Trenton was a man, and the one he needed to approach was Serenity, so he could not use Trenton. Camryn, before recovering her sight, was a careful person who played dumb and hid her talents, making her difficult to control. Now that she could see, she was even harder to manipulate, especially with Callum York by her side. Mr. Longbottom did not think much of the Yorks, and neither did he want to make enemies out of them, as that would mean facing multiple adversaries at once. The major families in Wiltspoon had all aligned themselves with the Yorks. The key issue was that his strength lay far away in Havenmill, and he had too few connections in Wiltspoon. On the surface, there was only Carrie, who was of little use, while his underground connections were limited. Plus, these people resided in Wiltspoon and did not want to offend the Yorks unless absolutely necessary. Carrie grumbled internally. Since Mr. Longbottom thought she was the most useless, why had he even chosen her in the first place? Did he think she wanted to be his pawn? Did she want to be sullied by him and kept as a mistress? She could not even keep the baby after getting pregnant and had to abort it. Every single thing Mr. Longbottom did to her was a devastating experience for any girl. She could only tolerate it because she was afraid of dying and, being penniless, had to submit to Mr. Longbottom's threats and his very real wealth. After going through so much, Carrie realized that money was the most important thing. “Mr. Longbottom, I’ve really done my best.” She dared only to complain inwardly, not daring to openly retort. She feared he might suddenly appear, grab her by the neck, and easily kill her at any moment. Unlike her sister, she had no in-laws to rely on. She was merely meat on Mr. Longbottom’s chopping block, subject to his whims. Without her parents’ protection, Carrie felt she was lower than a dog. This realization made Carrie suddenly want to see her parents. The last time she visited them in prison, she had accused them of favoritism for transferring all their assets to her brother. Though they claimed to love her the most, they had given everything to their son. After that, she had not visited them for a long time. Now, she remembered how good her parents had been. Regardless of whether their favoritism was real or not, before their downfall, she had indeed been protected by them and had lived a carefree life. Except for the time she screwed up at the banquet with Serenity, she had not suffered any grievances. “You can’t go to the Johnsons' residence, but you can travel to the city. When Serenity took Sonny Brown to the Johnsons', you could have taken your so-called sister-in-law there to travel, orchestrating an encounter in their city.” Carrie fell silent. Mr. Longbottom, thinking her intelligence was lacking, could not help but scold her mercilessly over the phone.
