Chapter 6 Signing the Marriage Agreement
Jennifer was taken aback.
Something unexpected had happened.
Is it Simon again?
What a classic example of speak of the devil and he will appear!
Jennifer, holding her doll, approached the car window with a puzzled expression. "Simon?"
The dark car window slowly slid down, revealing a cold and gloomy profile from within.
In just an instant, Jennifer was stunned, her pupils rapidly dilating.
To her utter surprise, the person who showed up was
Xavier!
Jennifer was so frightened that she took two steps back, as if there was a ferocious beast sitting in the car.
Actually, even more terrifying than floods and fierce beasts!
In the passenger seat, Simon pushed the door open and got out.
"Ms. Gabel."
Simon approached and respectfully handed her a document, "I assume you've had enough time to think it over within a day."
It was the marriage agreement signed by Xavier.
Jennifer frowned.
With a puzzled yet slightly annoyed look, she turned to Xavier and said, "Didn't I already give you the answer this morning?"
"Sign it."
Inside the car, Xavier's attitude was cold and domineering.
However, these two words were full of pressure and left no room for objection.
His gaze remained fixed straight ahead, never once glancing at Jennifer. "As you are now, you have absolutely no room to refuse."
Jennifer did not know how to reply.
She bit her lower lip tightly.
"Ms. Gabel, your grandmother is still waiting for you to get the money for her treatment!" Simon kindly reminded Jennifer.
Jennifer just felt a pang in her heart.
In the end, what matters more: Gloria's life or her pride?
Thinking of Gloria lying in bed, waiting for her to save her life, and the mere 5 dollars left in her pocket, Jennifer gritted her teeth.
As Xavier said, she had no room for refusal at all.
"All right."
Jennifer seemed to have made a very difficult decision. She took a deep breath and accepted the document from Simon's hand.
Even if the path ahead was filled with mountains of knives and seas of flames, or a bottomless abyss, she had to forge ahead for the sake of her grandmother.
With determination, she swiftly signed her full name on both of the marriage proposal forms.
She signed it so fast, as if fearing one might change their mind.
Unable to even solve the basic issue of food and warmth, and incapable of protecting her own family, how could she have the right to talk about self-respect?
Self-esteem, for her at this moment, was nothing but a luxury.
It wasn't until she signed her name that Xavier's furrowed brow relaxed a bit.
"Start the car."
He gave the order in a calm voice.
The car window closed, and the black vehicle sped away like a gust of wind, swiftly blending into the night, becoming one with the darkness.
"Thank you, Mrs. Griffin, for your cooperation."
Simon carefully put away the documents and immediately changed the way he addressed Jennifer.
Suddenly, the formality of the address made Jennifer feel quite awkward. "Simon, you can just call me Jennie," she said.
Ding!
As they were talking, Jennifer's phone chimed, and a new text message popped up.
Jennifer quickly took out her phone from her pocket and glanced at it.
When she read what was on it, she was startled.
It turned out to be a bank transfer notification.
"One, ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand, million..."
A full 150 thousand dollars, credited right on schedule.
Isn't this way of making money a bit too easy?
Jennifer blinked, looking at Simon in disbelief.
It was only at this very moment that Jennifer felt as if she had fallen into an abyss from which there was no return.
What was the reason behind Xavier suddenly marrying me and being so generous?
Logically speaking, shouldn't he hate me to the core?
The thing he most wanted to do should be to tear me apart and take me down for his satisfaction, right? But why is it that not only did he not take my life, but he even married me instead?
The more Jennifer thought about it, the more frightened she became.
She felt like one day he might just dismember her at home, and she wouldn't know what happened.
Even as she thought about it, it was too late for regrets. The agreement had already been signed, and the money had been transferred to her account.
Unexpectedly, Jennifer really did end up fulfilling Yolanda's joke in the end - she actually sold herself out!
"Mrs. Griffin, it's cold outside, please get in the car!"
Simon smiled and respectfully gestured for Jennifer to get in the car.
Jennifer was taken aback. "Where are we going?"
"Let's go home."
"Which home? I don't have a home."
"From now on, Mr. Griffin's home is your home."
" ..."
Jennifer felt a bit dazed, and couldn't help but laugh inwardly.
Xavier's home could never become her home.
She still had this bit of self-awareness.
Jennifer nervously settled into the luxurious car.
There was nowhere she could go if she didn't get into the car. With only 5.33 dollars, she could only end up sleeping on the streets.
For the first time, Jennifer was riding in such a luxurious car. The excessive comfort, however, made her feel quite uneasy.
She sat upright, her head bowed and silent, her eyes focused on her nose, and her nose focused on her heart.
The car drove quietly towards an unknown destination.
It wasn't until Jennifer entered a winding mountain road that she suddenly realized what was happening.
"Is this the way to the Griffin residence?"
In an instant, chills ran down her spine, her delicate body stiffened, and she went into high alert.
Her pretty face turned pale, her eyes filled with anxiety and fear.
For her, the Griffin family was nothing less than a lion's den and a tiger's lair. Once she entered, she feared that not even her bones would remain.
"Mrs. Griffin, there's no need to worry, we're just going to Pagoda Mansion."
Jennifer knew about the Pagoda Mansion.
That was Xavier's private estate. Within its grounds stood two century-old pagoda trees. Every May, their fragrant blossoms filled the air, their scent drifting for miles around, thus giving the mansion its distinctive name - Pagoda Mansion.
When she was ten years old, she saw Xavier for the first time, right under the pagoda tree at Pagoda Mansion.
Pagoda Mansion is nestled on the slopes of Mount Griffin, situated in a remote and tranquil location.
At the summit of Mount Griffin stands a vast estate spanning two and a half acres. Within its grounds, little bridges cross meandering streams, birds sing amidst fragrant flowers, and the forest gardens are arranged in a picturesque manner, with winding paths leading to serene, secluded spots.
Inside the house lived the most prestigious member of the Griffin family, Zachary Griffin, who was also Xavier's grandfather and the founder of the Griffin Group.
At the peak, several small gardens were nestled side by side, descending downwards.
Although they were not as grand and magnificent as the Griffin Manor, they had their own charm and served as private residences for Zachary's children and grandchildren.
As for Xavier's Pagoda Mansion, it is an exception to the Griffin residence.
This separate courtyard was a special birthday gift given to him by his grandfather when he was five years old, which indirectly showed his status in his grandfather's heart.
Upon hearing that Simon wasn't going to the Griffin Manor, Jennifer breathed a sigh of relief. However, the thought of meeting the devilish Xavier again soon made her nervous, and she clenched her small fists once more.
After experiencing the ambiguous and entwined night yesterday, and now with this marriage contract, she had no idea how to face him.
It seemed as if Simon could see right through Jennifer's thoughts. He smiled slightly and said, "Don't worry, Mrs. Griffin. Mr. Griffin has already left for England, and he won't be back for at least three to five months."
"Huh?"
Jennifer was taken aback. "He's leaving just like that?"
"Yes."
" ..."
That's great!
Jennifer took a long breath, her heart filled with overwhelming joy, but she dared not show it.
