I glanced at Luke Jordan. He nodded, so I answered the call—and turned on speakerphone.
The caller was from the town hospital in Luke's hometown. They informed us that Luke's mother had ingested pesticide and was undergoing emergency treatment.
The moment the words left their mouth, Luke bolted for the door without looking back.
I followed, but first dashed to the nearby manager's counter, handed him the boarding pass, and said we wouldn't be boarding. We'd retrieve our luggage in a few days.
When I ran outside again, Luke had vanished.
I called him.
It took a long time before he answered. He said he was already in a taxi and had bought a ticket for the next train.
Then he added, "You don't need to come."
"I'm coming," I said firmly.
This involved me. I had to go.
If anything happened to Luke's mother, I'd carry guilt for the rest of my life.
Luckily, since Luke and I had taken the taxi one after the other, when I arrived at the train station and got off, I spotted him just ahead.
