Luckily, Emma had just memorized the name of Ethan's medicine — otherwise she wouldn't have had a clue what to buy.
She told the woman behind the counter what she needed, and the woman turned to look for it. After a while, she came back and handed the bottle over to Emma.
"Thank you, thank you so much," Emma kept repeating as she took it from her, almost like she didn't know what else to say.
She reached into her pocket to pay—and froze. Crap. She didn't bring any money.
Awkwardness instantly flooded her face, and she blushed in embarrassment. "I... I forgot to bring my wallet," she said to the shop owner, her voice soft and a little nervous. "Can I come back later to pay?"
The shopkeeper gave her a long look, clearly trying to figure out if Emma was faking it. Even if she wasn't, the owner didn't look too hopeful—after all, it was almost closing time.
Emma clung tightly to the medicine, afraid the woman would snatch it back and not believe a word she said.
