“Do you like it?” I asked.
But she didn’t seem to hear me. Her eyes were still fixed on the fireworks, the colors reflecting in her gaze.
I lifted my hand and pinched her cheek lightly between my fingers.
She turned toward me.
For a second, I just stared at her face—at the way the fireworks lit up her hazel eyes. Gold and blue flickered across them, bright against the dark.
Something about her eyes felt familiar.
And then—
An image flashed in my mind.
Emma.
I froze.
Why did I suddenly think of Emma just from pinching Olivia’s cheek?
Emma’s cheeks were softer back then. Rounder. I remembered noticing it once—how she used to puff them slightly when she was annoyed.
Olivia was different. Slimmer. When I pinched her cheek, there wasn’t much softness there—just warm skin beneath my fingers.
Yet for that split second, their faces overlapped in my mind in a way that felt strangely wrong.
I frowned.
Olivia removed my hands from her cheeks. That was when I came back to my senses.
