Everyone in the room tensed up right after Julian finished his sentence.
Especially Marian.
Her eyes were fixed on the door, full of panic, like she was expecting someone to burst in any moment and take her life.
"Michael, bring her phone," Julian ordered casually.
There was a faint, knowing smile on his face, like some all-seeing prophet who already knew how everything would play out—calm and in full control.
"Yes, sir," Michael said as he stepped out.
Soon, he returned with a bag and placed it in front of Marian, even helpfully unzipping it for her.
The phone screen lit up from inside.
Marian’s face went even paler, almost grey.
Her hands shook as she reached in, took out her phone, drew in a shaky breath, hit speaker, and swiped to answer. “Hello? It’s late, what’s going on?”
“Mrs. Coleman, how’s Charlotte? Has her fever gone down?” came a mature woman’s voice on the other end—gentle but deeply concerned.
