Suzanne slammed the brakes and worked the steering wheel to its limit, narrowly avoiding the figure on the road. Once the car came to a steady stop, she quickly unfastened her seatbelt and got out.
There, lying in the middle of the road, was a small white dog. It wasn't moving, and only the faint rise and fall of its belly showed it was still alive.
Suzanne rushed over to check its condition. Its front leg had been crushed, and its white fur was streaked with blood, making the injury stand out starkly. Out here in the wilderness, it would surely die if she didn't take it with her.
