Chapter 99
"I don't feel like moving," Atticus said. "I don't sleep well at the old man's place. I'm used to it, so don't bother me."
Elise was only trying to help, but since he didn't appreciate it, she went back to her room to read.
Even though she and Atticus were just good friends and didn't have romantic feelings for each other, she still thought it wasn't appropriate for a single man and woman to live under the same roof. Hence, after going into her bedroom, she closed the door and locked it.
There wasn't an air conditioner in her room. There was only one in the living room. Money was tight back then, and after being kicked out, she and Evelyn were just grateful to have somewhere to crash.
Elise found a small fan and set it beside the bed. Fortunately, she didn't mind the heat.
Atticus opened his eyes when he heard the soft click of the lock in the living room. Those usually playful, flirtatious eyes were now dark and cold. He didn't look like his usual roguish self either.
