Clara thought, "Damn it, Aidan! Why is he still hung up on Cassandra? What does that make me in all this?"
"Mom, please," Aidan begged, his pride completely shattered. "I can't go on without Cassandra. Losing her would destroy me." His voice cracked as tears streamed down his face.
Beatrice stood frozen. She had never seen Aidan like this before.
Was Cassandra really that important to him?
"Enough! Are you even a man? Why are you crying over something so trivial?" Beatrice snapped. "Fine. I'll make the call."
Aidan glanced up, locking eyes with Beatrice.
She looked back at him with disgust, taking in his drunken, tear-streaked face, smeared with snot.
Suddenly, an idea sparked in her mind.
"Mom, just make the call!" Aidan urged.
Beatrice exchanged a knowing glance with Clara, who stepped forward, striking up a conversation to distract Aidan.
Meanwhile, Beatrice snatched up the phone. After speaking briefly, she hung up.
