Chapter 440

“Who is he? What did he ask you to do?” I questioned Loraine, but she was unwilling to explain and kept silent. Yara noticed that something was not right and placed her head on my shoulder, asking softly, “What are you talking about?” Loraine had an ugly expression. I did not want to make things too difficult for her and decided to stop my questioning. However, a shred of uneasiness was embedded in my heart. Suddenly, I thought of Dixon. However, the moment I thought about him, my mind went blank. I could not make anything out of it. I calmed my heart down. “It’s nothing.” I brushed it off and shifted the topic. “Is Lance not here yet?” Yara said calmly, “How would I know?” After a year, Yara’s attitude toward Lance was just the same. I had no idea what went on in that girl’s mind. I patted Yara’s head. She wrapped her arms around my waist and giggled, “Caroline, can you accompany me for some shopping?” Although Yara was young, she had a mature mindset. She figured out that I had some issues with Loraine. Hence she planned to separate us and have us calm down. Understanding her motivations, I replied, “Sure.” Yara and I coincidentally ran into Lance downstairs. He parked in front of the hotel doors. He was caught off guard when he saw both of us. “You came down here just to welcome me?” Yara retorted, “Uncle, you’re too narcissistic.” Hearing that, Lance smiled gently. “We’re going out for some shopping,” I explained. “Alright. I’ll go look for Raine first.” Lance strode into the hotel with his big and tall figure. I turned to Yara, who was beside me. “Lance was a light that I sought after during my teenage years,” I whispered gently. “It was too bright and narcissistic. However, that light is something that I will never be able to approach for eternity…” The Nanjing sky was filled with brightly lit stars. Yara held onto my arm and asked curiously, “Why can’t you approach it?” I shifted my gaze to Yara’s delicate and innocent face as I said softly, “Light causes burns. When I knew him, he was a beam of light. When Loraine knew him… You should know about the things between him and Loraine. He was once a beacon of light for Loraine as well. Only you knew him as he is… You won’t fall in love with him at first sight as we did. You won’t idolize nor fear him. You can face him casually and naturally. You appear as your true self before him.” Yara’s face was filled with doubt. “Why are you suddenly telling me about him?” “Lance once told me that he loves you.” Yara frowned. “You want us to be together?” “No. I wish that you can give him a chance.” Yara said, “Caroline, he’s very gentle to me.” Lance had always been a gentle person. Ever since Lance confessed to Yara on new year’s night, he never expressed his emotions again. That was because he understood Yara. If her heart was unwilling, it would not help, no matter how much he clung to her. He might as well take it slow. Using all sorts of excuses to meet her, he would eventually be able to reach into her heart quietly. However, he did not have that much time to drag things out with her. That was because he was older by almost 14 years. ‘You’re born earlier than I was. When I was born, you’re already old.’ That was something that Yara had told him. Lance skirted around the two women of equal social standing before him and entered the hotel. On the third floor, he knocked on the door and found Loraine long waiting for him. The delicate girl before him was equally important to him. However, she could only be his family. He had always treated her as his own family. He could finally feel relieved since she was getting married. He called out with a thin voice, “Raine.” Her lips curled upwards as she saw him arriving. “Brother, can you go for a walk with me by the river outside?” Loraine had something to say. She wanted to see an end to the decades of unrequited love, even if he did not take it to heart. Lance nodded. “Let’s go.” Both of them arrived by the river bank without realizing that someone was coincidentally standing by a willow tree nearby, enjoying the winter breeze. Of the two on the riverbank, one was the wife he was about to marry, while the other was a man he knew, but his wife never introduced them. He knew that man well as he had listened to his musical performances. The international musician—Lance Gregg. Moreover, he was the brother of his wife. Loraine had two brothers. They both looked the same. During the trip to the village in Nanjing for the proposal, he had met one of them.
