Lucien's POV
After convincing Scarlett that I would only use myself as bait and wouldn't put myself in danger, I watched as her eyelids grew heavier and she burrowed into my arms. Her breathing finally steadied while I gently patted her back.
What she needed most was rest. After all, what we had encountered and experienced during the six days in Hollow Glen hadn't been easy, and I felt like I was the one dragging her down.
For the first time, her face was relaxed, lips parted slightly—so different from before, when we were in the forest and she would wake at the slightest sound of my raspy breathing or even the rustling grass. She was always alert, on guard, especially when I couldn't move at the time and couldn't share her burden.
But now that I could, I was determined to protect her and catch that traitor before anyone else fell to his schemes. Fortunately, I was their target; if it had been Scarlett, she would have thrown herself into danger regardless, even as she desperately neede
