Scarlett's POV
I clutched Lucien tighter, dragging him against me while staying vigilant, especially since I had just confirmed there were a dozen enemies coming our way. Tears had already blurred my vision, but I refused to let him go.
I had to move. I had to save him.
"Hold on," I whispered, half to him and half to myself, even though his breath was faint and his eyes were closed. "Just hold on a little longer."
Finally, I found a hollow—an alcove of rock hidden by overgrown roots and thick shadows. I lowered him carefully onto the mossy ground, my hands trembling as I tore at my pack.
Blood still seeped from his wounds, staining his black shirt. His brows were furrowed and beads of sweat dotted his forehead, mixed with his blood. My vision blurred, but I tried to focus on him, refusing to let my emotions overwhelm me.
