Chapter 197 How Could She Go Through This?
A fair and soft little palm, which was probably smaller than half of hers, with slightly curled up stubby meaty fingers looked extremely adorable.
Lindsey followed the little hand and saw that it was a three or four-year-old boy. He was very cute as he looked at her with big, round eyes.
She was at a loss for a moment and looked at the little guy in front of her before she asked softly, "Why are you tugging at my shirt? Where are your parents?"
Lindsey herself did not realize how soft her voice became as if she was afraid she would scare the child in front of her.
The little one was apparently not afraid of strangers. He was just a little shy. When he heard Lindsey, he said with the smallest voice that tickled Lindsey’s heart. "Ball..."
"What ball?" Lindsey was very patient.
The hand that was tugging at the corner of her shirt did not move, but his other hand pointed down. Lindsey looked in the direction he was pointing and found a small watermelon print plastic ball under her seat.
Lindsey bent down and picked it up, then wiped it with a wet tissue before handing it to the little boy with a smile.
The little one was clearly happy to see the thing in his hand. His voice was clear and crisp as she said, "Thank you!"
Lindsey could not resist pinching his fleshy little cheeks, then she watched his short legs run up the front of the plane.
He disappeared into a seat not far away. Lindsey looked away and stared at the corner of her shirt that the little boy tugged on.
Lindsey did not inform anyone that she had left Atlantic City. After that little episode, it was a peaceful flight until the plane landed. When she arrived in the unfamiliar city, Lindsey then recalled that she should first find a place to stay.
She hailed a taxi outside the airport that would send her directly to the city center. Since she did not know where to go, she asked the driver to just drive her around. When they passed by a hotel that looked pretty decent with nice surroundings, she paid for the ride and got off.
Lindsey thought that she would stay here for a few days before heading to the hospital. What she did not expect was meeting an accident when she was on her way out to buy something.
She chose this hotel because it was not in a particularly busy area, but it was still downtown after all, so there were street lights to light up the dark streets.
Lindsey bought some daily necessities. When it was almost 9:00 pm, she heard a scream coming from a small alleyway.
She stopped in her footsteps and unconsciously looked over.
Somehow, the street lights nearby were broken, so her vision was very limited in the dark. Lindsey could not see what was in the distance and only saw that a black shadow seemed to be moving.
Lindsey was startled and was just about to leave when she heard a shriek coming from the source of the scream earlier. However, this shriek was abruptly cut off as if that person was being strangled. It sounded extraordinarily harsh.
She shuddered and froze in place even though she thought of leaving earlier.
In the next second, a high-pitched female voice cut through the unsettlingly quiet night.
"The police are here! The police are here!" Police sirens sounded along with these screams.
In the darkness, several voices that were not too deep sounded in the distance. "Let’s go! F*ck! Why would the police come here?!"
"Who knows! Hurry up and run!"
"Go! Go! Go!"
Then, there were sounds of departing footsteps.
After making sure that those thugs were far away, Lindsey turned off the siren simulator in her phone and turned on the flashlight. She then shone it warily into the darkness in the distance.
A girl was lying there.
Her clothes looked expensive and her hair was all over the place, so Lindsey could not see her face. The girl was lying against the wall and Lindsey did not know whether she was dead or alive.
Lindsey stopped and did not dare to go any further. She first called 911, then gritted her teeth and walked over.
As she approached, the girl on the ground suddenly twitched, which scared Lindsey into almost screaming.
After a violent bout of coughing, the girl on the ground cursed, "Those f*cking scumbags!"
Somehow, Lindsey felt that this voice sounded familiar. It was not until the girl opened her eyes and turned to look at the bright light shining on her that Lindsey realized this familiarity was not her illusion.
This girl was clearly still a little angry because of the incident earlier. She coughed incessantly and bluntly said, "Will you stop shining the flashlight in my face? I’m about to go blind!"
Her tone was not very polite, but Lindsey did not get mad. Lindsey thought that it was indeed uncomfortable and turned the flashlight off. She then squatted down to pull the girl up from the ground and handed her a tissue before dragging her to the nearest street light.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt? Yvette? You’re Yvette Wendell, right? Why are you here?"
Lindsey was very surprised to meet someone she knew on her first day here. When she saw Yvette looking all disheveled, she could not help but ask a bunch of questions.
Only then did Yvette look at Lindsey. "You’re Shaun's sister?"
"Yup." Lindsey lifted Yvette’s head slightly. With the glow from the street lights, Lindsey could see a bruise on Yvette's neck.
She gently touched it, which made Yvette wince and avoid her. "I just got strangled. It's okay though, I'll be fine in a few days."
At that time, the ambulance Lindsey called just arrived.
Yvette said that she was visiting some relatives in Harrisburg, but her bag was stolen on the way, so she chased them all the way here. She did not realize that it was a gang operation and fell into their trap.
If she had not run into Lindsey, who knew what would happen to her.
The nurse was cleaning Yvette’s wounds as she glanced at Yvette. She saw that Yvette was dressed head to toe in luxury labels that were probably worth tens of thousands of dollars. She was also very pretty, so it was no wonder that she would be targeted.
The smell of disinfectant made Lindsey's stomach churn. She had not eaten anything all day today and tried suppressing the urge to vomit, but she could not hold back and finally threw up in the trashcan around the corner.
"Are you alright?" A nurse passed by and patted Lindsey's shoulder. "Do you want to go for a checkup?"
Lindsey waved her hand. She suddenly thought of something and raised her head again as she suppressed another bout of vomit. She said to the nurse, "I'm pregnant. Can I take a pregnancy test now?"
"You're pregnant?" The nurse had not answered before Yvette’s voice sounded from behind.
Yvette had a babyface, so it was hard to tell her age. At that moment, she was looking at Lindsey with wide eyes.
