A wave of dread swept over Hugh. His eyes darted around the living room, almost expecting Kelly to show up at any second. "Kel..." he called her name, again and again, his chest tightening with anxiety. An unbearable thought began to creep in. What if Kelly had actually left him? But he couldn't let himself believe it. "Kel, this has to be some kind of joke, right? Come on, this isn't funny. I know I messed up this morning, but Nattie and I are just friends. Please, believe me." Hugh didn't slow down as he spoke, his eyes searching everywhere, trying to find Kelly hiding somewhere. Then, it hit him.
