“Then go back to sleep,” Sloane said softly.
She pulled the pink blanket higher over his chest with the seriousness of someone performing a medical procedure. The ridiculous pastel color clashed hilariously with Dominic’s usual cold, lethal aura, softening him in a way that made her chest twist a little.
“I’m taking Jeremy to get something to eat,” she added. “He barely touched the cake earlier. His stomach’s probably eating itself right now.”
Dominic’s hand tightened around the edge of the blanket, and the faint upturn of his mouth disappeared completely.
“Mm.”
The sound was clipped, low… strange.
Cold enough to fog glass.
Sloane blinked.
What was that about?
Before she could decipher it, the door burst open and Jeremy skidded into the room like a small hurricane.
“Auntie! Let’s go, I’m starving!”
Then he saw Dominic on the sofa.
His eyes went round. “Uncle… did you pass out from hunger?”
Jeremy bounded over. “Uncle, are you gonna come with us? We’re going to eat now!”
