Later that day...
At the hospital
I paced outside the ICU, my heart pounding with every footstep. Hours had passed, but it wasn't until the doctor finally came out and told us Mom was stable that I could breathe again.
The immediate danger was over. She was safe for now.
But the relief was short-lived.
"She'll need surgery," the doctor said. "Soon. Or she won't make it."
I sank into a nearby chair as the doctor walked away. Anna came over and sat down beside me. "Relax. I solved the problem. Declan is ready to perform the surgery."
I was stunned when I heard her mention Declan. I looked at her, searching her eyes, wondering if she had patched things up with him.
"He arranged a specialist team and even offered to reduce the fees," she added. "Everything is lined up. The surgery will be done soon."
It sounded too convenient. I didn't trust him.
"Are you sure he will help us?" I asked skeptically. "Do you trust him?"
