I stared at my phone, gripping it so tightly my knuckles turned white. “Didn’t I tell you to take Sophie’s husband with you to the school to cause trouble?” I hissed into the receiver. My frustration bled through my voice. “What are you doing? Why haven’t I heard anything? Why is there no movement at the school?”
Days. I’d waited for days. No news about Sophie being expelled, no rumors flying through the hallways. It was as if someone had stepped in, shielding her, erasing everything that should have ruined her.
Who had that kind of power?
On the other end of the line, her mother spoke in her shrill, irritating voice, “Miss, please wait a little longer. Her father and I are still figuring out what to do. That stubborn little bitch—she won’t listen to us. And I don’t know who’s backing her up, but she’s been acting strange. She doesn’t even seem scared anymore.”
