Chapter 8
Emmanuel hung up the phone, feeling nothing out of the ordinary.
Janet, however, was clearly upset: “The days when you belong only to me are almost over, and soon we'll have to hide again.”
Emmanuel responded with a warning tone: “Don't let me notice anything unusual, or you know the consequences.”
Janet began to cry: “Alright, alright, I know. You've said it a thousand times.”
Emmanuel saw that she was about to cry, so he bent down to comfort her: “It's best not to cry when you're pregnant; it's not good for the baby.”
“You're being mean to me.”
“Then I'll apologize to you. I'll buy you a bag. Which one do you like?”
Janet looked up: “Let's go back to the company. Let's do it one more time before you go home.”
Emmanuel wasn't in favor of it: I already told Erin I'd be home in two hours. We don't have time."
“Just say there's traffic on the way. Anyway, the airport highway does get congested often...”
Emmanuel glanced at his watch, still hesitating.
