Chapter 269
Hearing that, Edward Hawthorne picked up his phone and walked out to the balcony. Alice Sterling tried to push down the unease in her chest and kept eating.
She’d just had two sips of porridge when he came back in.
“Something urgent came up at the office. I need to head out.”
Without waiting for a response, he bent down, wrapped his arms around her shoulders briefly, then turned and left.
As soon as the car drove out of the estate, the warmth in Edward’s eyes vanished.
Just then, his phone rang again.
He frowned and pressed the car’s Bluetooth. Within seconds, the gentle voice of a woman filled the closed space.
“Edward, you don’t need to come anymore. My leg’s feeling better now.”
He instantly slammed the brakes. On the other end of the line, hearing the screech, the woman chuckled softly.
After a few seconds, she finally stopped laughing and said, “What’s wrong? Upset you missed dinner with Alice? Or mad that I played you?”
The air in the car turned heavy, like it was suffocating.
