Although some people at the Academy knew I was married, no one knew what my husband looked like. Not his face, not even a proper silhouette. Lucas was the only exception and I intended to keep it that way. What was the point of letting them see him when sooner or later, this marriage would dissolve into nothing but bitter memories?
So when my colleague teased over the video call, asking if the man she barely saw in the background was my boyfriend, I forced my voice to remain steady. “He's not my boyfriend,” I said quickly, hoping that would end the matter. “That's my husband.”
