Chapter 37
Kay
"What did you just say?" my father yells from the door, and I groan at the interruption.
He had his time, and he was about to kill the man for what?
"They have your mother, Ace," he whispers in a defeated voice, and I don't think I have seen a man this broken.
My grandpa loves his wife more than anything. I understand why he did what he did.
"Who, when?" my father asks in confusion.
"I don't know their Identity yet, but I was so close. All I receive is phone calls from a censored voice, and anytime I get close, I end up with nothing," he mumbles tiredly.
"I took your mother on a date, and on our way back home, we were ambushed, and the unknown men abducted her," he starts explaining.
"I looked everywhere to no avail, and that's when I was told to come here and report everything that is happening to them, or she dies," he sighs, avoiding our gazes.
"I love her ace, I couldn't let her die, so I took those cookies and brought them to Princess. I was also instructed to train her with that sword. That's why I brought it to her as a gift," he mumbles, looking away from me, and I shake my head in disappointment. Everything was a fucking lie.
"I can't believe this shit, you could have said something, Dad. Mum is in danger, and my daughter almost died," Dad shouts, pointing at me in frustration.
Carl walks back in, and I roll my eyes. This is the privacy I demanded.
"You don't understand, son, this person has his people everywhere, among you, too. His main target is Kayla. I don't know what they want with her, but they're not the ones who caused the accident; Russians did," Grandpa explains, raising his voice.
"So you mean it's not the Russians who send those flowers?" Carl asks, moving to stand beside me.
"No, this is a different person who has been watching you, sweetheart," he mumbles regarding me with piteous eyes.
"Fuck Grayson. You have been killing his men," my dad says, hitting the wall next to him hard, and I wince.
"It's not him either, I had that thought, but I have my men following him, and he doesn't know you survived," he explains, and I look down at my hands. I have two men out to get me.
One wants to hurt me for Carl, and the other one, I don't know his motive yet.
"Could it be Rico?" Carl mumbles hopefully, and I scowl at him.
Rico won't hurt me.
"As much as I hate to say this, but your brother cares for Kay enough not to lay a hand on her," Grandpa assures, and I'm glad they're starting to think something positive about him.
"I don't understand, who is the woman in the photos?" I ask when I remember the woman with the mask.
"She always has a mask on, but someone got her on camera without it. The day you got in an accident, I was headed to get the evidence, but I found him dead. If I could lay my hands on the pictures, I would have known who has my wife."
"Do you suspect anyone?" I ask with hope, praying he has an idea
"Yes, but I will tell you later, it's hard to trust even these walls," he whispers, looking around cautiously.
"The day you shot Thomas, he was about to say something. What was it?" my dad asks, crouching in front of him.
"Thomas knew who the supposed master was. He and another unknown person in your house were his men. The day you caught him, I received a video call with a gun to my wife's head. I had to choose between him and her."
"What were you arguing about that morning in his room?" I chip in when I remember what Theo had told me.
"Just like you had figured he was a snitch, I also did and was trying to desperately get something from him, but he won't budge."
"Does any of you have enemies I'm not aware of?" I demand looking from Carl to my father. We need to uncover this shit before it escalates.
"Apart from Victor, I don't think I have any other enemy," Carl says, and I look at my father.
"It was Grayson and he lay low. I don't know what to think anymore," he answers, sighing.
This is not as easy as I thought; people's lives are on the line because of me.
First, it was Thomas's family, and now my grandma.
I need my informant back, not Dean, though. I need to talk to Rico, he's at least in the game, and he knows stuff Carl and my father don't.
I think I should go back home because Carl will not allow me to meet his brother while I am here. I will pretend to be very mad at how that doctor kissed him, and he did nothing to stop her.
I won't be pretending, though, I am so mad at him right now.
I also need to meet River. I still have his number in my room.
I can't continue staying here and acting disabled while someone wants me for whatever reason.
To think I was so eager to learn to fight with that sword, but now I am very scared of it. Was that story a lie, too?
"Where is the sword, Grandpa?" I wonder out loud.
"The woman took it," he says lowly.
"Well, let's take you home. Can you walk?" I curse at myself when I remember both of his thighs were shot at. The old man groans when he makes a move but fails.
"What do you mean, let's take you home? He's not leaving here," my father deadpans, and I glare at him
"What do you mean, Father?" I stand upright now face to face with my dad.
Maybe it's time I let the cat out of the basket.
